Breastfeeding Medicine & Lactation

Breastfeeding Medicine & Lactation

Breastfeeding Medicine & Lactation

breastfeeding / chest feeding baby

  • We know that breastfeeding is not easy for everyone and that having the support when you need it is key to your success and continuation.
  • We do our best to see you ASAP, usually within a few days.
  • Common conditions that we evaluate and treat include engorgement, poor latch, nipple pain, cracked nipples, flat or inverted nipples, over or under milk supply, yeast and mastitis.
  • We evaluate and help with bottle feeding problems like leaking milk, clicking, choking and can offer suggestions on bottle type and nipple flow rates.
  • Feeding problems can be associated with poor weight gain. Each visit we do weighted feeds to see how much milk baby is getting and keep track of overall weight gain.
  • Because of our pediatric background, we address concerns about reflux and colic.
  • Not all pumps have the same effectiveness. We can check the suction on your pump and help you find the settings that work best for you.
  • Additional support is available for bottle refusal,, going back to work, introduction of solid foods and baby-led weaning.
  • Lactation teas, feeding supplies, and some pump flanges are available in office.
  • We offer support for those who want to induce lactation or re-lactate.

Tongue & lip-tie

Breastfeeding Medicine & Lactation

Breastfeeding Medicine & Lactation

  •  Tongue and Lip-tie can be a controversial topic among healthcare providers so you may have been told different things by different providers.
  • We provide a thorough evaluation of the mouth, tongue and lip function including observation of feeding at breast and/or bottle.
  • A comprehensive structure & function exam of the body helps to identify other asymmetries & tensions that may affect oral function.
  • Tongue and lip-ties can be associated with breastfeeding pain, gastric reflux, solid feeding problems, snoring, mouth breathing, poor sleep and much more.
  • We take the time to rule out other causes of the problems before we recommend releasing the ties.
  • Release of the tongue, cheek and / or lip-tie using a carbon dioxide (CO2) laser is very precise with minimal bleeding and heals well.
  • Topical anesthetics are available when appropriate
  • We guide you through the aftercare with wound stretching and oral function exercises to increase tongue mobility
  • We refer to experienced providers for supportive bodywork including chiropractic, cranial sacral, massage, occupational, physical, and speech therapy.
  • You will have at least 3 follow-up visits  and more if needed.

Prenatal Lactation Consultation

Prenatal Lactation Consultation

Prenatal services

  • We offer a prenatal visit which is usually recommended between 28 to 37 weeks of pregnancy.
  • If you have had breastfeeding challenges previously, have flat or inverted nipples, had breast surgery or you have questions and just want to be prepared, we can do an evaluation and make a plan.
  • We discuss childbirth education resources and birth preferences.
  • Breastfeeding and newborn care education is strongly encouraged to prepare you for success.
  • Learn about colostrum expression after 37 weeks of pregnancy so you have frozen colostrum for those early days of the baby's life. This gives you other options besides formula if your baby needs supplementation.
  • This prenatal lactation visit establishes your care with our practice so you will have the lactation support you need right after birth.
  • No pregnancy & birth services offered
